In Greek mythology, Ganymede was carried up by Zeus, in the shape of an eagle, to the Olympus to be the gods’ taster. Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, a master of Neoclassical Age, carved the group in marble the first time in 1817, and then produced a few other marble copies. Because of the growing international fame of his work, shortly after his death in 1844 started a production of fine biscuit porcelain made by Antique Royal Copenhagen.
